Man have shaved at all times. There are many examples of razors from antiquity, and earlier. On this website you can see a picture of a razor made of bronze, from Egypt, 1405-1367 BCE: http://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/broughttolife/objects/display.aspx?id=92135
Stone Age people used tools including flint, shells and pumice stone for hair removal. But the sharpest tool known to man is the rock called “obsidian” (“glass rock). Obsidian is natural glass, formed during volcanic eruptions. This has been used in many cultures since the dawn of time. Obsidian is actually still used today in blades for scalpels. It is therefore rather odd to think that it was only in the 1900s that the steel in razor blades began to be so good that it approached the sharpness of obsidian.
Check this video of a guy who pokes loose a splinter of obsidian – and shaves with it!
