Finally a real barbershop in Trondheim

UPDATED!
Today I had a nice visit at Trondheim’s new barbershop “H2 Barber & Sons”.
Finally, someone in my home town: Trondheim, has realized that there is a market for a real good old fashioned shave with hot and cold towels, and associated delights.

In the shopping mall “Merqur senteret” in Nordre gate, the hairdressers chain “H2 ” recently opened a barbershop in “the old style”. The guys who work there can give a good shave (shavette) and they also do hair styling for men (this is a pure gentleman lounge). The interior is done with wooden cabinets, old shaving-related pictures on the walls, and not least: Real barber chairs!

Barber Alexander Jacobsen starts with a round of hot water on the chin. He then massages in one layer with pre-shave cream. Then he puts on a hot towel. It is arranged  so that it covers the throat, chin and mouth. He then fold the ends of the towel and puts them on the eyes and forehead – just as you’d expect at a real barbershop. They do not use hot tap water to heat the towels, but use a heating cabinet. Then he put on a layer of shaving cream, that he first whipped up in a cup. For the shave, he uses a shavette with Astra blade.

The shave was quick and good. Alexander has good technique and he does the whole shave without spilling a single drop of blood, and he finished the shave with a cold towel and some good aftershave lotion. They offer two varieties of shaving: “Traditional shaving” (390, -) and “Full traditional shaving” (590, -). The difference between the two variants is one-pass, and two-pass shaving. I got the one pass shave this time, with some touch ups. The result looks nice, but I had four days of growth, so i think a one-pass was shave was not enough. If you have a few days worth of stubble, you should probably choose the “Full traditional shaving” (two-passes) to get 100% smooth.

All in all a very positive experience with friendly staff and a barber with good technique.

Update:
Last weekend the guys in H2 Barber and sons had a course with the English barber Chris Foster. I visited them again on Friday to check the progress 🙂  There actually was a noticeable change in barber Alexander’s shaving technique. For example, he used more “pinching technique” to stretch out the skin. This time I got a two-pass shave, making the shave much smoother. Alexander tells that Chris Foster will be coming to them once a month to work on their shaveing and barbering techniques. I will continue to follow the development of H2 Barber and sons 🙂
Check out this cool video from Foster’s visit at H2 Barber and sons.
